Font Reserve Font Management for Mac

For those of you who have not heard the news yet, Adobe has announced the "end of life" of the Adobe Type Manager Deluxe font management program. Adobe supports ATM Deluxe for Mac OS up to 9.0.4. Read the full story on Adobe's website.

For the past several years, Maccimizer has utilized and recommended Font Reserve, the award-winning Font Management software by Diamondsoft. Font Reserve creates a literal vault of fonts and uses a relational database to manage them. Since very early editions, Font Reserve could automatically open fonts that were not open in a Quark document without the need to quit Quark, and with no necessary user interaction.

General Overview

Since the early days, Diamond Soft has fine-tuned their tool to extend to a plug-in for Adobe Illustrator, and with version 2.6 is the only font management tool to offer a plug-in that automatically opens fonts in InDesign. They have also refined the Quark tools in Font Reserve version 2.6. When you open a file in QuarkXpress that has missing fonts, whether they are in the Quark document, or included by reference but not embedded in EPS files, Font Reserve recognizes the fact and opens the fonts as needed.

In addition to robust font management, identification of problems and resolution, Font Reserve also contains many features that appeal to graphic designers . . . those most likely to have large font libraries. You can sort or "filter" fonts by kind (PostScript, TrueType, etc.), Foundry, Class (Humanist Sans, Grotesque Sans, Serif, etc.) and Version, among many options.

This allows a designer to view their entire font collection through a very narrow window, perhaps only viewing the Grotesque Sans fonts to find a particular look.

Font Reserve has always had wonderful capability to not only display font samples, but also to create all sorts of specimen books, highly customizable to your wishes. Previously this level of customization was only available through third-party software like TypeBook and and other applications.

Font Reserve Server

For larger shops, Diamond Soft has developed Font Reserve Server, a server-based application that allows an entire shop to have a single "vault" of fonts which is centrally-controlled by an administrator. Access to the database, and ability to add or remove fonts is fully controllable with extreme granular ability . . . allowing particular users to add fonts to a single project, single family, or single collection. Full control of font amount in use is also available to assure your shop's compliance to your font licenses.

New for Font Reserve 3.1.3

As of this writing, Font Reserve 3.1.3 is the only type manager that can simultaneously manage fonts in both OS-X and Classic from the same font database. Font Reserve 3.1.3 is fully compatible with OS X 10.4 (aka Tiger).

An additional feature unique to Font Reserve 3.1.3, which is very appreciated by mac users on all platforms is the ability to automatically manage the System Fonts. Using the System Font Handler, Font Reserve will show the user all fonts that are not essential for machine operation, and provide an option to move them out of all places they might be put by the System. This includes the System Fonts folder (OS X), System Fonts folder (Classic), Library Fonts (OS X) and User Fonts (OS X). While Font Reserve may not be the only product with this feature, we feel it works better than other competing software.

The advantage of this feature is that when you need to do work for external use in Helvetica or Times, you can have your system default to your Type 1 versions of Helvetica or Times, reducing the chances of costly last-minute revisions when things break differently when you send a critical job out.

With our experience with type since 1980 and our experience with Font Reserve since 1999, we can help you with installation, training, configuration and implementation of a font management system utilizing Font Reserve.

* Sites with over 10 users of Font Reserve should seriously consider Font Reserve Server. Font Reserve Server vastly simplifies managing libraries of fonts for large groups of users, as well as helps you to manage your resource and license liabilities.
